Workshops
They have been creating, researching, fabricating and holding workshops on kites since their interest began in 2018. Initially begun as a medium with which to explore material and psychic damages and possibilities within the sky, kites have brought them closer to multiple communities in Los Angeles and traditional artistry. Specialized in Korean kites such as bangpaeyeon (fighter kite) and gaoriyeon (stingray kite) Choi has conducted workshops with a breadth of audience members of all ages, collaborating with museums, art organizations, community centers, schools, libraries, festivals and birthday parties. Choi has since adapted these kite forms into simplified and authentic forms that younger and less experienced artists can create with more ease. They believe kite-making offers tactile opportunities to engage with history, arts and crafts, philosophy, science, self-discovery and relationship to land and sky.
Choi offers:
- 1 day kite workshop lasting 2-4 hours, up to 15 participants
- kite workshop series
- 1:1 kite workshop
Fabrication
Additionally, kite fabrication work is available with varying levels of engagement on the design. Choi has worked on projects with visual artists in which the artist completes the sail design and Choi constructs it into a kite with bamboo, string and other necessary hardwares. Other projects have involved collaboration on both design and construction.
